I particularly like the Pictish warrior woman's clothes and the intricately drawn details of her shield ,spear and what I think are tattoos.But are the tattoos actually painted on
temporary designs like body paint?
Sorry for the late reply! According to several accounts, it was an actual tattoo rather than body paint. For example, Isidore of Seville explicitly uses the word 'punctum ('pricked')' to describe the Picts' tattooing. Below is the excerpt:
"These are played upon by a needle working with small pricks and by the squeezed-out sap of a native plant, so that they bear the resultant marks according to the personal rank of the individual, their painted limbs being marked to show their high birth."
